Biography

Lorenz Widauer, born in Salzburg, Austria, is known as “one of the most outstanding talents of the Austrian music scene” (Salzburger Nachrichten). His musical journey began with an extensive exploration of classical piano. Until the age of 17, he had the opportunity to perform in esteemed concert halls such as the Großes Festspielhaus Salzburg and MuTh Vienna. As a piano soloist, he collaborated with orchestras such as Philharmonie Salzburg, interpreting works ranging from Mozart piano concertos to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. This early exposure to the classical repertoire laid the foundation for his versatile musical career.

Widauer later turned to the trumpet, first studying classical performance with Andreas Lackner (Innsbruck) and Johann Plank (Vienna), before pursuing jazz studies under Lars Seniuk and Andy Middleton at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK), and Ruud Breuls at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. With a passion for classical, contemporary, and jazz music, he seamlessly integrated these influences into his musical identity.

At just 26 years old, he has already toured throughout Austria and Europe as both a leader and a sideman in a variety of ensembles, diverse both stylistically and in size. These include Christian Muthspiel's Orjazztra Vienna, Shake Stew, Yvonne Moriel’s sweetlife:quartet, as well as his own project Chez Fría—a contemporary, transdisciplinary ensemble featuring jazz musicians and performers of early music, founded as a commissioned project by the Music Festival Potsdam Sanssouci.
From 2021 to 2024, he served as the solo trumpeter in the prestigious production of Jedermann at the Salzburg Festival (Salzburger Festspiele), further solidifying his place as one of Austria’s leading young musicians.

Another key artistic focus for Widauer has been his long-standing collaboration with acclaimed guitarist Philipp Schiepek. Together, they co-lead a quartet that has developed organically over the past three years, shaped by a shared musical language rooted in improvisation, lyricism, and subtle interplay. After an intensive period of composing, rehearsing, and performing, the ensemble recently completed its debut album, set for release in early 2026.

Widauer received the Hubert von Goisern Culture Award and won the ARTEDEA competition. He has performed with renowned artists such as Miguel Zenón, Linda May Han Oh, Immanuel Wilkins, Michael Abene, Kris Davis, Becca Stevens, Guillermo Klein, and Gileno Santana, among many others. In 2024/25, he was selected as the trumpeter for the Focusyear Band 25, an elite one-year program at the Musik-Akademie Basel led by Wolfgang Muthspiel, marking yet another milestone in Widauer’s artistic journey.
