Biography
Lorenz Widauer, born in Salzburg, Austria, is known as “one of the most outstanding talents
of the Austrian jazz scene” (Salzburger Nachrichten). His musical journey began with an
extensive exploration of classical piano, during which, until the age of 17, he had the
opportunity to perform in esteemed concert halls like the Großes Salzburger Festspielhaus
or MuTh Vienna. As a piano soloist, he collaborated with orchestras such as Philharmonie
Salzburg, interpreting pieces ranging from Mozart Piano concertos to Gershwin's Rhapsody
in Blue. This early exposure to outstanding classical repertoire laid the foundation for his
versatile musical career.
After Lorenz decided to become a trumpeter, he first studied classical trumpet with Andreas
Lackner (Innsbruck) and Johann Plank (Vienna), before pursuing jazz studies with Lars
Seniuk and Andy Middleton at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) and
Ruud Breuls at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
With a passion for both classical, contemporary and jazz, he seamlessly integrated these
influences into his musical identity.
Being 25 years old he has already toured all over Austria and Europe as both a leader and a
sideman in a variety of ensembles, diverse both stylistically and in size, such as Christian
Muthspiel's Orjazztra Vienna, the Roman Schwaller Quintet or Yvonne Moriel’s
sweetlife:quartet as well as his own project Chez Fría, a contemporary transdisciplinary
ensemble featuring jazz musicians and performers of early music, founded as a
commissioned project by the Music Festival Potsdam Sanssouci. Furthermore, he has been
the solo trumpeter in Salzburger Festspiele’s prestigious play Jedermann for the past four
years.
Since 2023, Lorenz has been primarily focusing on developing his own sound and recording
original music. In his newly founded acoustic quintet*, he weaves together a tapestry of
diverse stylistic influences, seamlessly merging avantgarde sounds with a strong classical
tradition from his Salzburg homeland and the vibrant sounds of the young and hip New York
jazz scene. At the same time, he initiated an electronic based quintet**, centering around
spherical melodies and earthy grooves. This project’s first production, a compelling twenty
minute live performance, was released this year’s December.
Lorenz has been awarded the Hubert von Goisern Kulturpreis as well as the Joe Zawinul
Award and has played with Michael Abene, Joe Gallardo, Frank Delle, Miho Hazama, Robert
Landfermann, Jonas Burgwinkel, Gileno Santana, Nils Landgren, Allen Vizzutti, David
Helbock, Philipp Schiepek, Lorenz Raab, Fabian Rucker, Anna Buchegger, Joris Dudli, Mario
Gonzi, Oliver Kent amongst many others.
